How does segregation in schools affect a student's education?
I. Description of Problem or Issue

56 years after the Brown vs. Board of Education decision to desegregate schools and abolish the "separate but equal" norm there are an overwhelming number of public schools in America that are still substantially made up of a single race. We want to know how this continuing segregation in public schools affects a student's education.

II. Research Summary

David's research is aimed at answering the first question below. He found articles that looked for alternate methods to teach students how to become more culturally aware and proficient. Three articles referenced this topic directly, while one article answered the question directly by following a class that aims to teach teachers how to develop a cultural lesson plan for students of a predominantly similar race. The other two articles David found helped answer the big question of the group and gave him a better understanding of the issues at hand with segregation in America's public schools. He was able to connect many of the ideas presented in each of his articles together in order to come up with an interesting solution to segregation and cultural awareness.Jennifer's research is aimed at answering how having a diverse teaching staff helps a student succeed. She found articles that take on outlooks of different social classes and how they perform academically. Three articles referenced the main topic directly and while one article answered the question of having a diverse teaching staff helps better students success.
